Should you take a tour to Shirakawa-go, or just catch the bus? As someone who grew up in Takayama, I get asked this a lot. The honest answer is that it depends on where you’re starting from, how much time you have, and how much you hate the idea of a sold-out bus.

In this guide, I compare the main ways to visit Shirakawa-go from Takayama, Kanazawa, Nagoya and Chubu Centrair Airport, including the local sightseeing buses that many international visitors don’t know about.

Quick answer

  • Landing at Centrair Airport? Go on your own by train and highway bus. You can go where you want and take as long as you like, and the buses are comfortable, with Wi-Fi.
  • Staying in Takayama? The Nohi Bus sightseeing tour is my top pick for a stress-free day trip. It runs daily and includes the observation deck shuttle.
  • Staying in Kanazawa on a weekend? Look at the Hokutetsu sightseeing bus.
  • Starting from Nagoya with only one day? A guided day tour that combines Takayama and Shirakawa-go is the easiest way to see both.

Tour or regular bus? The local view

The regular bus is the cheapest way to get to Shirakawa-go, and it gives you the most freedom. But in busy seasons, reserved buses sell out and the non-reserved ones fill up fast, especially in autumn and winter. A tour takes that stress away: your seat is guaranteed and the return trip is included.

My rule of thumb: if you only have one day for Shirakawa-go and can’t risk missing it, book a tour. If your dates are flexible and you’ve booked your bus early, go on your own.

From Centrair Airport: go on your own by bus

Many visitors to this part of Japan fly into Chubu Centrair Airport near Nagoya. From the airport, my recommendation is to skip the tour and travel on your own:

  1. Centrair Airport to Nagoya: take the Meitetsu train to Meitetsu Nagoya Station, about 30 minutes.
  2. Nagoya to Takayama or Shirakawa-go: highway buses leave from the Meitetsu Bus Center, next to the station. They take about 2 hours 45 minutes to Takayama, or about 2 hours 40 minutes direct to Shirakawa-go.

Why I like this way best:

  • You’re free to go wherever you want. Stop in Takayama, head straight to Shirakawa-go, or continue to Kanazawa. It’s your trip.
  • You can take as much time as you like. No tour schedule means no rushing through the places you love.
  • The highway buses are comfortable. You get a reserved seat, your big suitcase goes underneath, and you can use Wi-Fi on board. After a long flight, that makes a big difference.

Reservations are required for the highway buses, and they sell out in busy seasons, so book as soon as your dates are fixed. My Takayama to Shirakawa-go bus guide covers the whole route from Centrair, step by step.

From Takayama: Nohi Bus sightseeing tour

If you’re staying in Takayama and want a stress-free day, this is the tour I recommend. It’s run by Nohi Bus, the local bus company.

  • Departs: Takayama Nohi Bus Center (next to JR Takayama Station), 8:30am. Check in at the counter at least 15 minutes before.
  • Returns: about 3:50pm. You can also get off at Shirakawa-go at about 3:00pm, which is handy if you’re continuing to Kanazawa.
  • Time in Shirakawa-go: about 3 hours, free to explore on your own.
  • Included: entry to the Gassho-zukuri Minkaen open-air museum and the shuttle bus to the Tenshukaku observation deck.
  • Price: ¥9,000 for adults, ¥7,000 for children aged 6 to 12. Lunch is not included.
  • Booking: opens 3 months before your travel date. The booking page and phone line are in Japanese.

Local tip: from December to March, the open-air museum is closed every Thursday, and there’s no refund for it. If you want to see the museum, avoid a Thursday tour in winter.

Why I like it: your seat is guaranteed, so you don’t have to fight for one on the regular bus, and the observation deck shuttle and museum entry are already included.

From Kanazawa: Hokutetsu sightseeing bus

If you’re staying in Kanazawa, Hokutetsu runs a similar sightseeing bus to Shirakawa-go.

  • Runs: weekends and public holidays only, from April 2026 to March 2027.
  • Departs: Kanazawa Station West Exit, bus stop 2, at 9:30am.
  • Returns: about 5:20pm.
  • Time in Shirakawa-go: about 3 hours 20 minutes.
  • Price: ¥8,000 for adults, ¥7,000 for children. Lunch is not included.
  • Booking: required, and opens 3 months ahead, online or by phone.

Visiting Kanazawa on a weekday? Look at guided day tours from Kanazawa on booking sites instead, such as this Shirakawa-go and Takayama day tour from Kanazawa on Klook, or take the regular bus, which takes about 1 hour 15 minutes and needs a reservation.

From Nagoya: guided day tours

Nagoya is a long way from Shirakawa-go, so most day tours from Nagoya combine it with Takayama in one long day. They usually leave early in the morning from near Nagoya Station and take around 11 to 12 hours, with roughly 2 hours in each place. Some also stop at Gujo Hachiman, a pretty castle town on the way.

One of the most popular options is this Takayama and Shirakawa-go day trip from Nagoya on Klook, which stops at both places in one day.

These tours are a good choice if you’re short on time. But if you can, I’d honestly recommend spending at least one night in Takayama, so you can visit the Miyagawa Morning Market. It’s held every morning along the Miyagawa River, and it sells local ingredients and specialties that people in Takayama have loved for generations. Day tours from Nagoya usually reach Takayama late in the morning, when the market is already winding down.

Private tours

Private tours with a driver, and sometimes a guide, give you complete freedom: hotel pickup in Takayama, your own pace, and extra stops like Hida-Furukawa. They cost the most, but split between a family or small group, they can be worth it. They’re especially good in winter, when you don’t want to wait outside for buses.

Going on your own from Takayama

If you’re already in Takayama, the Nohi Bus to Shirakawa-go takes about 50 minutes and costs ¥2,800 one way. Some buses need a reservation and some don’t, and they can sell out in busy seasons. I’ve written a full guide to booking the Takayama to Shirakawa-go bus, including what to do when it’s sold out.

Visiting in winter? Read this first

  • Snow can delay buses and tours, sometimes by a long time. Don’t plan a tight connection afterward, especially a flight from Centrair.
  • Wear waterproof boots with good grip. The village paths get icy.
  • The famous evening light-up in January needs a separate reservation, and normal day tours don’t include it. See my Shirakawa-go Light-Up 2027 guide.

FAQ

Is a tour worth it, or is the regular bus enough?
If your dates are fixed and you’re visiting in a busy season, a tour is worth it for the guaranteed seat alone. If you want freedom and book early, traveling on your own by bus is cheaper and more flexible.

How much time do I need in Shirakawa-go?
Two to three hours is enough to walk the village, visit a farmhouse and go up to the viewpoint.

Do these tours include an English guide?
The local sightseeing buses mainly give you free time to explore on your own, and their booking pages are in Japanese. Tours on international booking sites often have English support, so check each listing.

Do tours include lunch?
The Nohi Bus and Hokutetsu sightseeing buses don’t. You can eat in Shirakawa-go, where there are plenty of small restaurants and street food stalls.

Information last checked: October 2026, from the official Nohi Bus and Hokutetsu websites. Fares and schedules can change, so always check before you book.
